Ser and estar both mean “to be” in Spanish; let’s look at different ways to identify which one we should use in different scenarios.

We can use the acronym “DOCTOR PLACE” to help us!

Ser normally follows these guidelines:

  • Date or Description
  • Occupation
  • Characteristics
  • Time
  • Origin
  • Relation

If in doubt, remember ser is for situations that are long term or permanent. These things will not change quickly.

Estar normally follows these guidelines:

  • Position
  • Location
  • Action
  • Condition
  • Emotion

Estar is the more temporary form of ‘to be’ so think about things that can change more quickly!
