The pluperfect tense refers to distant past actions; I had done/gone/seen etc. in English. We can use it in combination with other past tenses to signify the order of events in the past.
E.g. I had rung the doorbell when my phone rang. – The doorbell was rung first, then the phone rang.
I had arrived at the hotel when the rain started.
When we form perfect tenses, our auxiliary verb is ‘haber’. For the pluperfect tense, we will conjugate haber in the imperfect tense.
The participle will be the past participle formed for regular verbs by removing the AR/ER/IR from the infinitive and adding -ado for AR verbs and -ido for ER/IR verbs.
Remember that many verbs have irregular past participles.
The compound structure will be HABER + PAST PARTICIPLE:
| HABER | |
| Yo | había |
| Tú | habías |
| Él/ella/Usted | había |
| Nosotr@s | habíamos |
| Vosotr@s | habíais |
| Ell@s/Ustedes | habían |
E.g. Había estudiado para la prueba – I had studied for the test.
Habían comprado pastel para su boda – They had bought cake for their wedding.
