Future tenses

We are going to look at two tenses which will tell us what is going to happen or what will happen (these are indicative). Here we will look at some examples:

1. The immediate or near future

This tense is used to describe what is ‘going to’ happen, usually in the short term future:
La mujer va a llevar un vestido rojo.
Vamos a visitar el museo.

You need 3 sections to conjugate the immediate/near future tense:
The present tense of IR + a + infinitive (AR/ER/IR ending).

Voy a ir
Vas a bailar
Va a hablar
Vamos a visitar
Vais a comer
Van a beber

2. The simple future tense

This tense refers to actions that “will” take place in the future:
En el futuro compraré un Tesla.
El ano próximo viajaré por Europa.

Infinitive + endings:

Who Ending
Yo (I) é
Tu (you singular) ás
El/Ella/Usted (He/She/You polite/it) á
Nosotros/as (We) emos
Vosotros/as (You, informal, plural) éis
Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes (They/You, formal, plural) án

Irregular verbs use a slightly different stem with the same endings.

  • Drop multiple letters from the infinitive:
    Decir = dir
    Hacer = har

  • Add ‘d’ to the infinitive:
    Poner = pondr
    Venir = vendr
    Salir = saldr
    Tener = tendr
    Valer = valdr

  • Drop the ‘e’ from the infinitive:
    Poder = podr
    Querer = querr
    Caber = cabr
    Haber = habr
    Saber = sabr
