Le prétérit modal
- Le verbe est au prétérit mais ne se rapporte pas au passé
- Après des expressions comme :
- « would rather + un 2e sujet » : « I’d rather you left now. » ( = je préfèrerais que tu partes maintenant)
- « It’s high time. » : « it’s high time we helped children in third world countries. »
- Pour exprimer un souhait irréalisable dans le présent : « I wish I could go on holiday now. »
- Après « if » (auquel cas, la principale est au conditionnel) : « If they had work at home, people would not emigrate. »
