Street art : taking over public space
Art can be much more than a form of entertainment or personal expression. Throughout history, artists have used public spaces to communicate political ideas, challenge authority, and encourage resistance. Among these forms of expression, graffiti has become a powerful tool because it transforms walls and streets into spaces for public debate.
During the Second World War, visual messages in public spaces played an important role in encouraging resistance and strengthening national unity. In the United Kingdom, posters, murals, and street messages were used to motivate citizens and maintain morale during the conflict. Art became a way to spread information, express determination, and oppose the enemy.
Today, graffiti continues to be associated with protest and political activism. By appearing in public spaces without official permission, street artists question who controls public environments and whose voices deserve to be heard. Graffiti can therefore challenge political power and give visibility to social issues that are sometimes ignored.

Similarly, the collective Hackney Flashers used photography to highlight the lives and struggles of working-class women in East London. Their work addressed issues such as poverty, gender inequality, and social conditions. Through their images, they transformed personal experiences into political messages.
These examples show that photography can become a form of activism by documenting reality and encouraging social awareness.
Indigenous art : cultural recognition and political expression
For Indigenous peoples in countries such as Australia and Canada, art has also become a powerful way to defend identity, culture, and political rights. For many Indigenous communities, artistic expression helps preserve traditions that were threatened by colonization.
Painting, sculpture, music, and contemporary art allow Indigenous artists to convey stories, languages, and cultural knowledge. At the same time, art can be used to protest against historical injustices and demand recognition.
In Australia, Aboriginal artists use traditional symbols and modern techniques to express their connection to the land and challenge the consequences of colonization. In Canada, First Nations artists often address themes such as identity, sovereignty, and reconciliation.
Art can also create economic opportunities by allowing Indigenous artists to share their work internationally while supporting their communities.
Art is therefore a powerful form of political expression. Whether through graffiti, photography, or Indigenous artistic traditions, artists can challenge dominant narratives, defend identities, and give a voice to marginalized groups. Art does not simply reflect society : it can transform the way people understand social and political issues.
